Utah Log Cabin members believe in the Republican principles of federalism, limited government, non-intrusive government, freedom of religion, family independence, strong national defense, free market economics, and strong policy to prevent and punish crime. Furthermore, we hold the following beliefs:
- We believe constitutions should not be amended due to sudden, reactionary public sentiment when the laws in question have not been tested.
- We believe all Americans should be eligible to serve our country in the armed forces, regardless of partner preference.
- We strongly support family structures within the gay population. We support the traditional family, as almost all of us have originated from them. Gays and lesbians are also part of the family. The family is weakened when gay family members are excluded.
- We believe government should not impede the formation of families, and that same-sex couples should be allowed to form families by adoption or surrogate parenting. Many gays in Utah are already biological parents.
- We believe government should not be used to interfere with the global debate within religious organizations about the moral legitimacy of same-sex relationships. Government should be accommodating to the different religious views on sexual orientation.
Our strategy is to make the case for equal civil rights for everyone regardless of partner preference. We must take our case to the people of Utah and the elected officials who represent them. Those of us who are gay need not abandon our conservative values and political principles. Neither need we abandon our political party.
